Louis B Schmitz

December 8, 1921 — February 6, 2013

Louis B., son of John T. and Anna (Hackfort) Schmitz, was born December 8, 1921, on a farm near Willey, Iowa. He attended St. Mary's School in Willey. Louis entered the United States Army and served in the China Burma India Theater in the 931st Signal Battalion. He had earned the rank of Sergeant at the time of his honorable discharge in 1946. After his discharge he returned to the family farm and attended Agricultural School in Carroll. He farmed in partnership with his brother Andy on the family farm near Willey until he retired in 1985. He remained on the farm until moving to Carroll in 2008. His time in the service was important to Louis and he was a loyal member of the American Legion for 65 years. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Parish in Willey. When his health began to fail in May of 2012 he moved to Regency Park Nursing Home in Carroll. He died there early Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 29 days. Preceding him in death are his parents; sisters Leone Kitt, Rose Gross and Marie Werner and brothers Ed Schmitz, Leo Schmitz and Paul H. (Pat) Schmitz. Louis is survived by his brother Andrew Schmitz of Carroll; sisters Helen Schmitz and Louise Kennebeck both of Carroll; sister in law Betty Masching of Carroll and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
