Madonna Clare, daughter of John J. and Martha (Powers) McMahon, was born August 24, 1922, in Manilla, Iowa. She grew up in Manilla and graduated from Manilla High School in 1939. After teaching country school for several years, she joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1945. On November 17, 1945, she was united in marriage with Vernie R. Langheim at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. One son was born to this union. The family made their home in Manilla. After 30 years in the post office, Madonna retired in 1975. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manilla and Catholic Daughters of the Americas where she served a term as president. Madonna taught second grade Catechism classes for several years and enjoyed preparing the youth for their First Communion. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Tourist Club. In her spare time, Madonna enjoyed bowling, golfing and having coffee and visiting with family and friends. Her husband Vernie died in 1995. Madonna remained in the home until her health began to fail. In 2004 she moved to Cedar Rapids to be nearer her son. She died on Thursday, January 19, 2006, at Northbrook Care Center, Cedar Rapids, at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 16 days. Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; three sisters Marcella McMahon, Madilyn Erps and Mildred Frandsen and two brothers Melvin McMahon and Morrell McMahon. She is survived by her son Mike Langheim of Cedar Rapids; brother Melroy McMahon and wife Jean of Des Moines; sister-in-law Verda McMahon of Cedar Falls; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
