Marie Joann Burns

January 18, 1918 — November 11, 2019

Marie JoAnn, daughter of James and Marie (Petroff) Balukoff, was born January 18, 1918 of Bulgarian heritage, on a farm near Roselle in Carroll County, Iowa. Marie grew up in Carroll County and attended country schools near Roselle, Willey and Dedham. When Marie completed her schooling, she worked on the family farm and was a hired girl who helped other farm families with attending to children and household duties.
On November 19, 1941, she was united in marriage with Raymond J. Burns at St. Joseph’s Church in Dedham by Rev. Henry Pick. They lived in the railroad depot in Dedham and Marie was a homemaker.
In 1958 they moved to Manning where her husband worked at the Milwaukee Depot. They lived in several homes in Manning over the years. Marie first worked at Priebe and Sons Hatchery candling eggs. She then worked for LR Nelson from 1963 until 1976 when she retired. Raymond died August 22, 1984.
Marie continued to live in their home, until June of 2016 when she became a resident of Manning Senior Living where she passed away on Monday, November 11, 2019, at the age of 101 years, 9 months and 25 days.
Marie was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish in Manning, as well as the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Altar and Rosary Society. In her spare time, she enjoyed tending flowers. Marie decorated the church and altar with beautiful flowers for over 40 years. Marie also enjoyed vegetable gardening, canning much of her produce, as well as, going to card club, sewing and playing Bingo.
