Maxine L. Handlos

Maxine Ann Lorene Joens, daughter of Ben and Anna Marie (Rostermundt) Joens, was born November 17, 1922 at home in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural school near her home and then completed her education at Manning High. On April 10, 1945 Maxine was united in marriage with Edward Handlos at Sacred Heart Church in Manning by Reverend A. Roder. Two daughters were born to this union, Joyce and Jennelle. Maxine and Edward farmed rented ground near Manning, Aspinwall and Botna before purchasing their own farm south of Manning in Audubon County in 1955. In 1980 they retired and moved into Manning. Maxine and Edward were members of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning. Maxine was also a member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed embroidery, baking, playing cards and traveling. After the death of her husband in 1989 she remained in their home in Manning. When she could no longer care for herself at home she moved into the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning shortly before her death. She died there on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the age of 92 years, 11 months and 7 days. Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; Edward's parents Albert and Mary Handlos; and three brothers in law Albert Handlos; Frank Handlos and Henry Handlos. Maxine is survived by her two daughters Joyce (John) Landa of Omaha, NE and Jennelle (James) Wilkins of Gilbert, AZ; three granddaughters Crystine (Martin) Galvan of Cape Coral, FL, Jaclyn (Robert) Bunjer of Elkhorn, NE and Nicole (Bradley) LaFar of Gilbert, AZ; five great grandchildren Lauren Galvan, Taylor Bunjer, Trenton Bunjer, Jaden LaFar and Cole LaFar; sister Ardella (Henry/Junior) Willenborg of Manning; two sisters in law Lila Handlos and Loretta Handlos both of Manning; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
