Maynard H. Rees

Maynard Harvey, son of John H. C. and Rosetta (Sheeder) Rees, was born May 24, 1914 on a farm in Guthrie County, Iowa. He attended rural school Seeley #9 near his home. After completing his education he worked for other farmers, the Civilian Conservation Corps as well as nearby packing plants. On July 28, 1937 Maynard was united in marriage with Leona M. Larsen in Atlantic. The family lived near Guthrie Center before moving into Atlantic in 1948. The next year they adopted their daughter Glenda. Maynard worked on a Garst Company farm for seven years and then ran the Mobile Oil Station for five years. In 1953 he began work full time at Garst and Thomas Seed Corn Company, retiring after 30 years in 1978. Maynard enjoyed his retirement playing Bingo and fishing. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. After the death of his wife Leona in 2001 Maynard remained in their home. Several years later Maynard was united in marriage with Julia Thomas. They lived in Carroll and Coon Rapids. After Julia's death Maynard continued to live at Swan House in Carroll. When his health began to fail he became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids where he died on December 22, 2014 at the age of 100 years, 6 months and 28 days. Preceding him in death are his parents; both wives, daughter and son in law Glenda and Larry Motsinger; brothers John Rees, Eli Rees and Jim Rees; and sisters Myra Shroyer, Lucille Barrett and Pauline Malcom. Maynard is survived by his four grandchildren Debbi Ellis (Dave) of Des Moines; Mark Motsinger (Colleen) of Des Moines, Tammy Pascuzzi (Joe) of Des Moines and Susan Andreas of Des Moines; seven great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren; brother Milo Rees of Guthrie Center; sisters Juanita Bjork of Fox Island, WA, Mary Rose Kent (Dwayne) of Des Moines and Betsy Sorensen (Harley) of Onawa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
