Mildred Millie? Spies Mildred Ann, daughter of Louis and Selma (Miller) Vennink, was born August 12, 1933, in rural Manilla, Iowa. She was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Manilla. Mildred attended school at Manilla and was a member of the 1949 state tournament basketball team. She graduated with the class of 1951 and then attended Commercial Extension in Omaha where she continued playing basketball. After completing her schooling in Omaha, Mildred moved to Manning where she worked at the Manning Hospital. She was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith on October 24, 1955. On March 6, 1955, Mildred was united in marriage with Russell Spies at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning where they continued as members. They started farming ½ mile north of Gray and spent their whole life on that farm, raising five children. Millie worked at Wells Manufacturing and Burcliff Industries in Manning and most recently at Jumbo Jacks Cookbooks in Audubon. She was a tireless worker, never retiring. Mildred was a long time member of the Gray ODO Club. In her spare time Mildred enjoyed playing bingo. Spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren, was most important to Mildred. Mildred died suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday morning, December 9, 2005, at Manning Regional Hospital, at the age of 72 years, 3 months and 27 days. Preceding Mildred in death are her parents; son Rick Spies and three brothers: Marlin, in infancy, Marvin and Wayne Vennink.
