Murriel Lavon Petersen

June 16, 1938 — February 3, 2017

Murriel LaVon, daughter of Earl and Dagny (Rasmussen) Breining, was born June 16, 1938 in Sherburn, Minnesota. The family moved to Kimballton, Iowa when Murriel was a young girl. She attended Elk Horn High School, graduating with the Class of 1956. After completion of secretarial school, she declined a Washington, D.C. job, choosing instead to marry the love of her life, “Pete”, and return to Kimballton.

On February 23, 1957 Murriel was united in marriage with Lloyd A. “Pete” Petersen at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kimballton, where she had been baptized and confirmed. They were the parents of seven children and continued to live in Kimballton where Murriel was a stay-at-home mother and according to her: the most important, wonderful, and toughest job ever.

She loved serving others and worked at various jobs throughout her life: Myrtue Memorial Hospital, EH Country Store, clerked at the Kimballton Auction, and Salem Lutheran Homes.  Murriel owned and operated The Dane Mart in Kimballton.

Murriel was a passionate sports fan and spent many years traveling to her children’s/grandchildren’s sporting events and many school activities.  She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton.

Murriel became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn where she continued to brighten the halls with her smile, twinkling eyes and “thumbs-up” attitude.  She died there from complications of Multiple Sclerosis on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 18 days.

Preceding her in death are her parents and husband Lloyd Petersen in 2006.

She is survived by her seven children Tony (Roxanne) Petersen of Kimballton, Terry (Vickie) Petersen of Mound City, MO, Jana (Scott) Smith of Kimballton, Troy (Cheryl) Petersen of Elk Horn, Trent (Tamara) Petersen of Indianola, Trace (Lisa) Petersen of Atlantic and Thomas (Jennifer) Petersen of Exira; 20 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; brother Ronald Breining of Elk Horn; sister Dianna (Jim) Juelsgaard of Kimballton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
