Robert Hagedorn

September 12, 1936 — December 13, 2021

Robert "Bob" Lewis Hagedorn, son of Lewis and Marie (Ehrichs) Hagedorn, was born September 12, 1936, at home in Crawford County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Manning High School with the Class of 1955.

After graduation Bob worked on a farm until October of 1956, when he went to California and worked with Standard Oil Company. After returning to Iowa in 1957, he began working at Manning Oil. On June 2, 1959, he was drafted into the United States Army. After Basic Training in Fort Carson, Colorado, he returned to Iowa and was united in marriage with Carol Jean Vollstedt on August 16, 1959. Robert then went to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for 8 weeks of training before being sent to Korea for 13 months. After his tour of duty, Robert returned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he was honorably discharged in 1961. He returned to Manning where he went back to work for Manning Oil, later becoming part-owner. They sold the business in 2001. After his retirement, Robert worked for the City of Manning for 9 summers taking pride in keeping the cemetery well kept.

Robert and Carol were the parents of four children and made their home in Manning. Robert enjoyed following his children's and grandchildren's activities. He was an avid Iowa, Iowa State and Cubs fan, attending many games after his retirement. Robert was part of a card club for almost 60 years and he also enjoyed getting together with family and friends for Euchre. On September 12, of 2019, Robert was selected, along with his cousin Duane Otto, to be part of the Brushy Creek Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He had many great memories and photos from that trip.
