Ruby Johnson

   Ruby Petra, daughter of Peter M. and Dagmar (Paulsen) Petersen, was born May 1, 1917, in Shelby County, Iowa. She attended country school at Rorbeck and later finished her schooling at Harlan High School. Ruby then worked at a caf in Elk Horn.    On August 24, 1936, Ruby was united in marriage with Alvin Johnson in Elk Horn. Six children were born to this union. Ruby and Alvin farmed for a short time before moving into Elk Horn. Ruby was a stay-at-home mom and later was employed by Salem Lutheran Homes for several years. Alvin died February 14, 1997. In January of 2004, Ruby became a resident of Salem Lutheran Homes. She was a member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church. Ruby enjoyed gardening, flowers, embroidering, playing bingo and cards, baking and canning. She was a happy-go-lucky, strong, loving mother who enjoyed being outdoors.    On Wednesday, May 10, 2006, Ruby died unexpectedly at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa. She was 89 years and 9 days of age.    Besides her parents and husband, Ruby was preceded in death by two sons Lynn and David Johnson; a grandson Christopher Richter; three sisters: Jenny Gardner, Mae Christensen and Virginia Lockhart and a brother Peter Petersen.    She is survived by four children: Craig Johnson and wife Karen of Rogers, Arkansas; Susan Stepanek, Karen Guttenfelder and Patti Richter, all of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a sister Leona Bancroft of Marne; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
