Ruby Olive, daughter of Ira and Julia (Kelly) Toms, was born February 23, 1930 at Wittemore, Iowa. Ruby and her large family moved a lot but lived mostly around Glidden. She attended rural schools in the area they were living at the time. After completing her education, she remained at home helping care for her family. On March 21, 1949, Ruby was united in marriage with Herman Richards at the Scranton Friends Church Parsonage. Six children were born to this union. They farmed for a short time near Scranton before moving to a farm south of Lohrville. In 1962 they moved to a farm south of Glidden before settling on a farm south of Casey where they remained for 27 years. In 2000 they retired and moved to Coon Rapids. While living around Glidden, Ruby worked at Boomsma Hatchery. In later years she worked at Garst and Thomas Seed Corn Company sorting corn in the fall. Ruby was a member of the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids. In her spare time, she enjoyed watching TV, playing cards, camping and cooking and baking. She and Herman spent many enjoyable winters in Texas during their retirement. Ruby underwent open-heart surgery in July of 2006 and had been suffering from several other ailments. She had been in and out of Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines while trying to recuperate at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids. She died at Thomas Rest Haven on Friday, December 15, 2006, at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 22 days.
