After Ruby completed her formal education in Yale she remained at home and worked on the family farm until her marriage. Ruby was united in marriage with Alvin Smith on December 23, 1933 at the Christian Church in Yale. Three sons were born to this union and Jane (Pierce) Erb lived with the family for a time during high school. The couple lived and farmed southeast of Yale until 1945, though they moved to Bayard in 1943. Ruby held various jobs in the community and was an excellent seamstress in addition to being a homemaker. Ruby was a member of the Church of Christ in Yale and American Legion Auxiliary in Bayard. After the death of her husband in 1987 Ruby remained in their home in Bayard. When her health began to fail in 2009, she became a resident of the Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids where she died on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at the age of 96 years, 1 month and 20 days. Preceding Ruby in death are her parents; husband; son Larry Smith; two grandsons Gene Smith and Darin Smith; granddaughter Heather Hantsbarger; two great-grandsons Joshua Smith and Matthew Smith; four sisters: Hazel Kraft, in childhood, Nyla Schlieman, Opal Rosenau, and Mildred Hemphill; and five brothers: Beryl, Lyle, Floyd, Ward and Wayne Kraft. Ruby is survived by sons LaVerne Smith and wife Donna of Carroll and Darwin Smith and wife Melba of Bayard; 8 grandchildren; Lynn Smith, David Smith, Danny Smith, Michael Smith, Joel Smith, Shannon Moore, Heidi Meadows and Heath Hantsbarger; 20 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; sister Doris Jontz of Panora; other relatives and friends.
