Sandra Hanson

Sandra Katherine (Gehlsen) Hanson of the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, formerly of Manilla, passed away Friday, December 2, 2022, at the age of 84.

Sandra, the 10th child of Peter and Pauline (Jahn) Gehlsen was born January 7, 1938, at Westside, Iowa. She grew up on the family farm near the 5-mile house, going to many dances and events at the 5-house, spending much of her time with her best friends Janice and Karen. In 1956, she graduated from Westside High School where she was the school band majorette and loved playing on the basketball team. Sandra then attended Northwest Missouri State University.

On November 23, 1957, Sandra was united in marriage with Larry Hanson. Six children were born to this union: Julie, Jody, Jill, Joel, Jena, and Richard. While raising their family in Manilla, Sandra also did some substitute teaching and later worked for Schram's Market.

Sandra was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. She enjoyed sports and watching her children and grandchildren participate in them. The family spent much time on weekends fishing and going on picnics which Sandra loved. One of her favorite past times was baking for family gatherings. She loved having her children and grandchildren visit and spoil them with her homemade treats.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Larry Hanson; brothers: Raymond (Loraine) Gehlsen, Leonard Gehlsen, Louis (LaVonne) Gehlsen, Ralph Gehlsen, and Reynold (Roseann) Gehlsen; sisters: Florence Sander, Melvina Meyer, Blondina Stoffers, and Judy Joens.

Sandra is survived by her children: Julie (Doug) Schechinger of Manilla; Jody (Reed) Chittenden of Omaha, NE; Jill (Kevin) Andresen of Schleswig; Joel (Julieann) Hanson of Lincoln, NE; Jena (Chris) Larson of Atlantic; and Richard (Christy) Hanson of Westside; grandchildren: Taryn (Mike) Eilertson; Tyler, Corey and Brandon Schechinger; Samantha (Thomas) Clothier; Shaylea and Sydney Chittenden; Ashley (Gallagher), Kyle and Justin Andresen; Tony and James (Jenny) Weesner; Trey (Jen) Lovell, Tanner (Makaela) Lovell, and Victoria Lovell; Jordan and Jacob Hanson; and 16 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
