Thomas Edward, son of Fred and Virginia (Eilers) Hey, was born August 2, 1947, in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended schools in Sioux City and graduated from Heelan Catholic High School in 1965. After one year at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Tom was drafted into the United States Army. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his honorable discharge in 1969, he continued his schooling at Westmar College at Le Mars. On June 27, 1970, Tom was united in marriage with Shirley Hammond at Immaculate Conception Church in Sioux City. They lived in Le Mars until Tom graduated and started teaching in the Manning Community School System. From 1974 to 1982 he taught Social Studies and Government in both junior and senior high. Tom then worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for eight years. For the last ten years he worked for Zee Medical Supply. Tom was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning. He taught CCD for many years, helped start the SHOUT youth group, and was active in the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight. The well-being of the Manning community was important to him as evidenced by his fourteen years of service on the City Council. Tom loved all outdoor activities, including fishing, ice fishing, canoeing and golf. He was an avid collegiate football fan, especially of Iowa State and Notre Dame. However, his family was of the utmost importance to him. Tom underwent successful knee replacement surgery on Tuesday, December 20, 2005. He died suddenly and unexpectedly the next day, December 21, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs while getting ready for physical therapy. He was 58 years, 4 months and 19 days of age. Preceding Tom in death are his parents; sister Carol Miller; sister-in-law Bev Hey and special friends Rob Taylor, Linda Steele and Dave Stuhr. He is survived by his wife Shirley Hey of Manning; daughter Stacey and husband Russ Wentz of Minneapolis; two brothers Jim Hey of Sioux City and John Hey and special friend Linda Jones of Sioux City; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
