Valda attended country school near her home and graduated from Manning High School in 1961. During high school, she was FFA Sweetheart and was on homecoming royalty.
On September 14, 1963, Valda was united in marriage with Gordell Lamp, her high school sweetheart, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Four children: Julie, Jill and twins Scott and Steven were born to this union. In 1969, they moved to and farmed northwest of Aspinwall until Gordy passed away in 2005.
