Alice Vera, daughter of Oscar and Lula (Slaybaugh) Albright, was born August 14, 1917, on the family farm in Guthrie County, Iowa. She attended Seeley #3 country school. Vera worked out in area homes in addition to helping care for her father. Vera was united in marriage with Carroll Stone at the Church of Christ parsonage in Bayard, Iowa, on November 28, 1937. Ten children were born to this union and the family lived in Bayard. Following an illness Carroll died in 1970. Vera began to work at the Bayard Café, and then as a cook at the Bayard School from 1974 to 1984 when she retired. Through the years she kept a large garden. Vera will be remembered as a great cook and baker, and her angel food cake was her specialty. Her children remember that she always had a homemade treat after school. Vera moved to the Thomas Rest Haven nursing home in Coon Rapids in November of 2010. She died there early Monday morning, July 8, 2013, at the age of 95 years, 10 months and 24 days.
