Virgil Bueltel

Virgil Bernard Bueltel, son of Frank and Theresa (Schenkelberg) Bueltel, was born May 6, 1921 in Templeton IA. He grew up on farms in the Templeton and Manning area. He attended Sacred Heart Grade School, Carroll County Country School, and graduated from Manning High School in 1939. Virgil was united in marriage with Marie Kenkel on February 17, 1947 at St. Peter's Church in Defiance. In 1948 Virgil and Marie purchased the family farm north of Manilla where they raised their family of six children: Jane, Lynn, John, Mary, Joel, and Anne. Virgil farmed for over forty years and retired in the fall of 1982. He was active in the Sacred Heart Parish in Manilla and Manning, Knights of Columbus, Farm Bureau, Crawford County Pork Producers and the Manning Senior Center. When he retired he enjoyed many hobbies including vegetable and flower gardening (especially hibiscus), Polka dancing, church choirs, Manilla Centennial Show Choir, playing cards and needlework including Hardanger. He was an avid high school boys and girls basketball fan and a lifetime St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. After Marie suffered a stroke in 1995 the couple moved to Manning. Marie passed away on July 6, 2000. Virgil was able to remain at home until the fall of 2009 when he moved to Papillion Manor in Papillion, NE. He died there November 26, 2013 at the age of 92 years, 6 months and 20 days. Virgil is preceded in death by his parents, wife Marie, brother Ed Bueltel and wife Betty, sister Rosalia and husband Joe Padrnos, in-laws James Sorensen, Mary Jo Bueltel, Mark and Bernadine Kenkel, Velma and Les Pederson, Henry Frees, Evelyn Kenkel, Austin Scheuring, Don Kuehnhold, and Clarice Hansen. Virgil is survived by his 6 children, 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren: Jane, husband Larry Hulme of Papillion NE and children Amy Hulme of Chicago IL and Andrew Hulme, wife Kristina and their daughter Elinor of Kansas City MO; Lynn Bueltel, wife Jennifer of St. Paul MN and children Paul Bueltel of Minneapolis MN and Andrea Abeln, husband Matt and their son Finnegan of St. Paul MN; Bill Siegel of St. Paul, MN; John Bueltel, wife Karen of Glenwood IA and children Danielle Bueltel, Jordan Bueltel of Glenwood IA, and Carly Bueltel of Chicago IL; Joel Bueltel, wife Donna of Newbaugh IN and children Brett Bueltel and wife Sarah of Indianapolis IN, Alexa Bueltel, Katelyn Bueltel, and Brian Bueltel of Newbaugh IN; and Anne, husband Nicholas Lorenzo of Grapevine TX and son Adam Bueltel of San Diego CA. Virgil is survived by sisters Florence Sorenson and Olivia Podwinski and her husband Wally; brother Duane Bueltel and in-laws Ray Kenkel, Theresa Scheuring, Fred Hansen, Ted and Judy Kenkel, Leona and Joe Moran, JoAnn Kuehnold, Joe and Alice Kenkel.
