Walter Albert Bay, son of Franklin and Rosa Anna (Reicher) Galloway, was born September 14, 1915 at Templeton , Iowa. He attended Templeton schools and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1933. Bay entered the United States Army on August 6, 1941 receiving his basic training at Ft Leonard Wood in Missouri. In December of that year, he was assigned to the 808th Engineer Aviation Battalion at March Field in California. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor his unit was alerted and sent to the Muroc Bombing and Gunnery Range in the Mojave Desert in California where they received orders for the Southwest Pacific in January of 1942. The unit arrived in Melbourne, Australia a month later. Bay served in the areas of Darwin, Australia, Port Moresby, New Guinea and Leyte, Philippine Islands until May of 1945. The unit carved twenty-three airfields out of the jungles of the Southwest Pacific. After his honorable discharge, Bay returned to Iowa and went to work for the Garst Company in Coon Rapids. On February 16, 1963, Walter was united in marriage with Lucile Steffes Irlmeier. They made their home in Templeton where Bay opened his own fertilizer and farm chemical business in 1965. He retired in 1980 and he and Lucille continued to live in Templeton. Due to health concerns, Bay became a resident of Swan House in Carroll on May 18, 1999. Lucille died on May 3, 2004. Bay entered St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll on November 1, 2006, and died there on Friday, November 17, 2006, at the age of 91 years and 3 days. Preceding Walter in death are his parents, wife Lucille; sister Colonel Irene Galloway; brothers Franklin, Maurice (Morrie) and Richard Galloway; five step-grandchildren: Doug Neppl, in infancy; Debra Sundrup in 1967; Linda Sundrup in 1984; Robert Irlmeier in 1989; and Steve Irlmeier in 1996. Walter is survived by his five step-children: Alice and husband Bob Sundrup of Council Bluffs; Diane and husband Roger Eischeid of Templeton; Jack (Eugene) Irlmeier and wife Janet of Kearney, NE; June and husband Art Neppl of Council Bluffs; Janet and husband Donald Hansman of Council Bluffs; 19 step-grandchildren; 29 step-great grandchildren; 2 step-great-great grandchildren; 2 nephews Tom Galloway and Jim Galloway and wife Kay and their sons Michael and Jonathon; other relatives and many friends.
