Winogene May Bower

April 24, 1921 — May 7, 2013

Winogene May, daughter of M.L. "Lafe" and May (Roberts) Hinecker, was born April 24, 1921 at Zearing, Iowa. She graduated from Zearing High School. During WWII Winogene worked at Marshalltown Manufacturing on a drill machine. On April 8, 1945, Winogene was united in marriage with Arnold M. Bower at Disciple Church in Marshalltown. They lived in Marshalltown before moving to a farm south of Coon Rapids in 1946. Winogene was a busy farm wife, working outside and keeping her own cow/calf herd. Arnold died suddenly in the fall of 1980 and she continued to live on their farm. Through the years she taught her nephew Ted and his wife Paulette McDonough about cattle, and they worked their cow/calf herds together. Winogene was an active member of the First Christian Church. She enjoyed reading and always kept a dog to keep her company on the farm, most recently Tally. When she needed more care, she moved to the Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids in May of 2011. Winogene died there on Tuesday night, May 7, 2013, at the age of 92 years and 13 days. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Arnold Bower; her sister Luella Reynolds (Don); brothers Roy Hinecker (Hazel) and Lucian Hinecker (Gwen); and nephews Ted McDonough and Bruce McDonough. Winogene is survived by nephews: Ralph McDonough (Nancy); Jay McDonough (Deb); Chris McDonough; and Randy McDonough; nieces: Ann McDonough; Eileen Schima (Jerry); and Paulette McDonough of Coon Rapids and sons Aaron and Jason; other relatives and friends.
