Henry Brus

December 4, 1938 — August 21, 2021

Henry Theodor Brus, son of Henry Hans and Margaret Pauline (Weller) Brus, was born on December 4, 1938, in Carroll County, Iowa. He attended Country School through 8th grade, then attended Denison High School, graduating with the Class of 1957.

On December 2, 1958, Henry was inducted in the US Army and served until his honorable discharge on December 1, 1964. He served three separate tours of duty, serving in Germany, South Korea and Alaska; all of these tours during peacetime. Shortly after his last tour of duty he was united in marriage with Norma Hanss on August 27, 1966, at the Presbyterian Church in Denison. Following this he worked as an orderly at a hospital in Council Bluffs. He considered becoming an RN at the time. However, he changed his mind. He began his education in Computer Science at business school in Omaha, Nebraska. He was considered an outstanding student, and upon graduation he accepted a position in teaching a night coding class at the same school. For a short time he worked in Washington, DC for the FBI. He accepted a new job at Commercial Federal Bank in Omaha, as a computer programmer and later, with more education, became a systems analysis. It was there that he was given the responsibility of developing a code for automatic bill paying systems. He was successful and the first in the area to create such a system.

Henry and Norma adopted a baby girl, Jennifer Lynne, born April 30, 1972. They drove from Council Bluffs to Waterloo on May 11, 1972, and she was their pride and joy ever since. Henry's next job was at First Savings and Loan in Omaha, NE as a computer programmer. Then he was rehired at Commercial Federal Bank, which changed the name to Bank of the West. After a long working career, he retired at age 67.

He was a longtime member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs. He was always available to whatever was asked of him. For 25 years, he had continuous dedication to being host of coffee hour between church services.
In his spare time, he had a passion for the stock market and kept current with all the numbers. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. When Henry and Norma would drive back to Denison to see family, he would always find time for a cup of coffee with Dwight at Cronk's Café. He was a big Cornhusker Fan of football and volleyball. He loved to go out to dinner at Ewald's Café in Council Bluffs, where Jennifer became a waitress and where she met her husband.

Henry left us on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at the Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was 82 years, 8 months and 17 days of age. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father and friend. He loved serving the Lord. He will be missed. Henry was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Jeanette Mott and Joan Santee; and one brother, Dwight Brus.

Henry is survived by his wife Norma Brus of Council Bluffs; daughter Jennifer and Mike Lindstrom of Tea, SD; two grandchildren Rachael and Derek from Tea, SD. He is also survived by brothers and a sister: Jerry and Millie Brus of Denison; George Brus of Denison; Judy Nobling of Humboldt; John and Ann Brus of Denison; Steve and Sandi Brus of Manilla; brother-in-law Ben Mott of Pleasantville; Close nieces and nephews; Dorothy Lueck of Des Moines; Nancy Lueck of Muscatine; Sandy Conklin of Kansas City, MO; and the extended Brus and Lueck families.
