Jolene Johnston

Mass of Christian Burial for Jolene Johnston, age 81, of Coon Rapids, will be at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids with burial in Union Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids. Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church.

Jolene Ellen, daughter of Urban and Mary (Brannan) Schmitz, was born August 13, 1941, in Carroll, Iowa. She attended Annunciation Grade School and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1959. Jolene then moved to Des Moines and worked for a financial institution for two years.

On September 3, 1960, Jolene was united in marriage with Alan Johnston. They moved back to Coon Rapids in 1961, where Jolene was employed at Iowa Savings Bank for several years. Later, she would do end of the month billing for her husband's hardware store.

Jolene was a meticulous housekeeper and enjoyed decorating her home, gardening, listening to music, reading, and watching old westerns, especially John Wayne movies. Jolene and Alan enjoyed traveling each year to the Southwest and attending the WestFest country music festivals. She loved collecting Native American art and pottery.

On Friday, August 19, 2022, Jolene died at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids, Iowa at the age of 81.

Jolene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alan, her step-father Richard Middleton, a sister Janice Gaitan, and her in-laws Dillon and Louise Johnston. She is survived by her sister Jeanette and husband Doyle Buckalew of Alleman; a brother-in-law Gary Johnston and wife Lucretia of Coon Rapids; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
